MPS | Publishing Solutions | Typesetting and XML Workflows
MPS has years of experience working with all kinds of pagination requirements. Whether you’re looking for a fast and cost-effective XML workflow for your academic journals or database-driven typesetting for an encyclopedia, our skilled paginators will meet and exceed all your requirements.
XML Workflows
For journals and many types of books, we use XML workflows optimized for speed—we can turn around a journal article in just four hours—and accuracy using Advanced Print Publisher (APP) and InDesign. A range of in-house tools, such as MacXIN, which helps with InDesign pagination, ensures that the typesetting process is as efficient as possible. We tend to use either the XML-IS or the XML-First workflow, depending on your preference and the nature of the content.
XML-IS
Where possible, we use the XML-IS workflow, in which corrections are made in the pagination file and all PDFs—author-review proofs, ahead-of-print online Web PDFs, and final-print files—are generated from the application file itself. We have refined our templates and our pre-editing tool, MacEditPro, to such an extent that we are now able to use the XML-IS workflow for all the journals we process as well as many of the books without compromising the quality of the XML. An in-house validation tool checks the integrity of the XML every time it is exported from the application file.
XML-First
In the XML-First workflow, corrections are made to the XML first and the updated XML is used to create the pages. XML is considered to be the source and it is used for all updates to the content.
Non-XML Workflows
For books that require a non-XML workflow, such as children’s books, school textbooks, and certain types of major reference works, we have a range of different options designed to handle high-design elements or heavily structured material. Expert paginators ensure that the specific requirements of each project are met. In addition, should any such work require an XML deliverable at the end of the process, we can convert the final application files to XML and supply these to you.
Fast and Ultra-fast Workflows
Where there is an urgent need, we can fast-track the production process to you by reducing the production time for a journal article from the regular eight to ten days to as little as two days or halving our book production turnaround time. We also provide an ultra-fast service for journals in which we process your content in a matter of hours.
Collaborative Workflows
MPS can work with you on the two leading collaborative workflow platforms, K4 and Woodwing, which use a centralized online system to enable each part of the pre-production process to take place simultaneously. In addition to speeding things up, this vastly reduces the margin for human error by providing a much better version-control mechanism. The role that we play in such a workflow—right from typesetting only up to full service—depends on the specific project and the client`s requirements.
Customized Workflows
MPS has the flexibility to adapt our workflows to meet your needs as we have done for a range of clients—from those in higher education to trade publishers. In addition to setting up a procedure to handle and transmit material through these customized workflows, we also develop special tools that may be needed and continually evaluate the process to refine it further.
Tools and Technology
Our team is skilled in working with all of the major pagination software, including InDesign, APP, Quark, TEX, LaTeX and FrameMaker. We select the software based on either the project’s requirements or the publisher’s preference. In addition, a suite of in-house tools helps paginators deliver a higher-quality product, faster. These tools include:
-   MacEditPro, an XML and database-driven    intelligent copyediting tool
-  MacAMS, a sophisticated graphic management    system
-  MacXIN, an efficient XML-based autopagination    tool for use in InDesign
-  MacTeX, a LaTeX-based editing tool that    assists typesetting, styling, and XML conversion
-  AutoMac, a user-friendly, online, automatic    pagination system
-  An XML QA tool that is customized to client    DTDs and ensures the integrity of the XML at     every stage of the process
